Description:
Although the original of this plan was probably drawn up by Theodore Dury, this is not his work, as it contains a lengthy criticism of his original design, and details of the 'improvements' done by Talbot Edwards, who was the Second Engineer. The handwriting is also not that of Theodre Dury. Dury's original plan is probably the one at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/16b, on which he had ammended his first plan for Stirling (shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/16a) with additional fortifications to the nether bailey and main entrance. Those improvements had obviously not satisfied the critic who had added the text to this plan, but whether that critic was actually Talbot Edwards himself or not, is not clear. Dury and Edwards had also come into conflict over the plans for Edinburgh castle (q.v.) There is a copy of this plan, done by John Beaumont, in the Tower of London Drawing Room, in 1795, at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/23b, and an unsigned copy at shelfmark MS.1646.Z.02/23c. The sheet has three panels, of which the middle panel is blank, the right hand side panel contains the plan of the whole of Stirling Castle, with some of the surrounding country, and the left hand side panel contains a 'Profile of 'Elphinstons Tower and French Spur'.
