Description:

This manuscript diagram of the gun 'Mons Meg' at Edinburgh Castle, is dated 1734, but unsigned. In addition to the diagram of the gun, it gives a description of her specifications. In addition to the military details, it also gives a brief history of the gun, which history it notes as being 'taken from the Records in the Advocates Library at Edinburgh'. However, this history conflicts with that of the present day authorities of the gun's origin, as is assigns its creation to Robert Borthwick, the Engineer of James IV of Scotland, and its date as 1511. It asserts that the name is after James IV's Queen, Margaret, and the word 'muns' meaning 'little', 'on account of her extraordinary size' [i.e.. the gun's size, not the Queen's!].
