Description:
This is the first in a set of five plans, the others being on images 00002655, 00002656, 00002657 and 00002658. According to the 'Board of Ordnance Register of Plans 1700-1800', the engineer overseeing the project was Andrews Jelfe, but the plans have been signed in the bottom right hand corner by Thomas Moore, who was one of the draughtsman working with Jelfe. Judging from the style and handwriting, he drew other plans for Jelfe, in the same year, notably Stirling. However, this set of Edinburgh plans, and one from Stirling, are the only ones that have Moore's signature. This sheet shows the central structure of the castle, around the Parade, comprising the King's Lodgings, the apartments of the Governor, the Sergeant of the Castle, the barrack masters and the gunners, and the schoolmaster, the gunners' barracks and soldiers' barracks, storerooms, gunports, coalhouses and drinking rooms. Andrews Jelfe worked on most of the major fortifications in Scotland, in the year 1719. There is another set of plans related to these five and the work at Edinburgh Castle, three of which are on images 00002611, 00002613 and 00002670 (with two copies on images 00002612 and 00002614). They are dated April 1719, and the Board of Ordnance Register indicates that they post-date these five. Four of those plans and their copies have been signed by Jelfe, but not necessarily drawn by him. Although the same draughtsman was responsible for all of them (except one of the copies), it may not have been Thomas Moore.
