Description:
|
This is the title cartouche of a map of Scotland first printed in London in 1679 by Robert Greene and William Berry. This copy is a later issue. The fine workmanship, typical of the17th century's best engravers, can be seen in the modelling of the faces and in the flowing script. The figures flanking the cartouche are a historical source in their own right. Surviving examples of tools and weapons are often difficult to date so illustrations in prints and paintings are often helpful. To the left is a man holding a falchion, the single edged chopping sword of the North European infantry between the late 16th and 17th centuries. To the right stands a farmer with bound sheaves of barley and a sickle.
