Description:
|
This plan of 'the Moss of Cairnbulg' was drawn by John Jaffray in 1737 as proof of boundaries, in a dispute between William Moir and a neighboring landowner concerning the moss. The veracity of the map is witnessed by two signatories. It shows the moss and surrounding lands, between Invernorth, Inverallochy and the coastal area of Cairnbulg, south of Fraserburgh, in Aberdeenshire, with annotations concerning the cutting of peat, including the note 'Here the people of Whitecairn did cast Peats formerly'. The cornland or arable field is marked. Below the title, Jaffray notes that the numbers across the map are depths in feet measured by Mr. George Douglas of Whiteriggs and 'Mr. Gordon of Logie Commissr'. They probably record the thickness of the peat, as there is a note that 'The figures with this mark + show where the Moss is deepening'. Below the title box is a note by George Douglas 'This is the plan of the Moss of Cairnbulg referred to [?] [?] [?] [?] proof led by Mr. Moir anent the said Moss [?] May 1737 George Douglas [?]'.
