Description:
This manuscript plan titled 'Plan of the lands of Butterwhat in the parish of Dalton', Dumfries, is undated but probably originates from the mid-18th century when improvements were extending to smaller properties such as this appears to be. The land, extending to 96 acres, is divided into muir, 56 acres of outfield which was wholly arable, and the croft land and meadows for grazing. One area of soft bog is likely to have been unusable. The property is bounded to the north by the commonty of Mouswald. If this property had rights of commonty, this would have given extra grazing for part of the year. Two fields within the boundary were farmed by other people.
