Description:
This plan, dated 1740, shows the rivers Dee and Cluny at Auchindryne and Castleton (Braemar). It relates to a dispute between Alexander Farquharson of Auchindryn and John Farquharson of Invercauld. Associated papers refer to a map, 'done by Invercauld himself'. The map shows the Rivers Dee and Cluny, with adjacent lands between Mill of Auchindryne and Castletown, parish of Crathie and Braemar, Aberdeenshire. John Farquharson of Invercauld purchased the castle and lands in 1732. Notes on the plan give details of erosion and deposition due to river flooding. Efforts by one landowner to reduce the effects of flooding often caused damage elsewhere. At Castleton, old and new castles are shown. The new castle (Braemar) was first built in 1628, burnt in 1689 and then rebuilt. Castleton is drawn including the kirk, ferry etc. A timber road shows the increasing importance of forestry.
