Description:
A map from part of an engraved and printed mid 18th century Pocket Atlas of Europe. It shows England and Wales with parts of southern Scotland and Ireland. England is divided into kingdoms thought to represent the Anglo-Saxon period, such as Mercia, the Kingdom of the South Saxons, etc. Hadrian's wall is named as 'the Pictes Wal'. This map is representative of the blossoming of popular antiquarian ideas during the 18th century. Although this example makes no attempt to show possible antiquities, the place names are clearly settlements deemed to be of Saxon date.
