Description:
This map shows the lands around the village of Heiton, south of Kelso, Roxburghshire, which were owned by the two Edinburgh schools Merchant Maiden Hospital and George Watson's Hospital. The Merchant Maiden Hospital was the first school for girls founded in Edinburgh in 1605. George Watson's College for boys was founded as a charitable hospital in 1741 by the Merchant Company, from the bequest of a successful Edinburgh merchant and financier, George Watson. The map is drawn on parchment, and the different fields are coloured and their boundaries outlined in colour. Their acreage is also written on them, as well as an identifying number, which relates to the table in the bottom left hand corner. That table indicates the acreage owned by each school, the kind of land and its use. The farms situated on the two properties are also shown as red squares, with their names. Many of these names still exist on the modern map. The boundaries shared with neighbouring landowners are shown, and the names of the landowners given. The village of 'Heitoun' is marked in yellow, as are the roads, which are labelled, the main ones being those to Newcastle, in England, to the neighbouring towns of Jedburgh and Hawick, and to Kelso itself. In the bottom right hand corner, a small section of the loop in the River Tweed is shown, with 'Kelso Bridge' crossing it, and one or two neighbouring houses.
