[Detail from:] Plan of the Forest of Mamlorne
Date:
1735-1737
Description:
This detail of a 'Plan of the Forest of Mamlorne' shows shieling settlements near the southern shore of Loch Lyon, Perthshire. These are shown as having consisted of between one and five buildings, although this depiction may be stylised. One shieling is described as having been destroyed by the forester in the summer of 1731. This may suggest that there were conflicts between the development of the land for summer grazing and the maintenance of the hunting. Mamlorne was an important royal hunting forest first mentioned in 1456. Among other sites noted on the key are 'the forester's hind fold' and a 'nursery for the deer'.
