This map of Stirlingshire, printed by the Rev. William Nimmo in 1777, has marginal drawings of several antiquities, and insets showing the layouts of the battles of Bannockburn in 1314 and Falkirk in 1298. Battle sites are also marked on the map. At Bannockburn, Robert Bruce defeated the larger English army of Edward II by careful use of the terrain. As the plan shows, Bruce placed his forces on the high ground so that the English army had to cross boggy ground and the burn. The interest in military sites is also shown by the drawing of the Antoinine wall (see full image #00001683), built between the Forth and Clyde by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. The associated Roman road north, the Gask Way, is also marked.
