Description:
Robert Gordon's map of Aberdeenshire and Banff published in Blaeu's 'Atlas' of 1654 gives a useful record of settlement before the 18th century improvements but it must be treated with caution. Rattray, north of Peterhead, is an example of this. Documentary sources suggest that Rattray was a burgh of barony in the 13th century, but in 1563/4 it was granted Royal Burgh status in order to end a feud between the Keith's of Broadland and the Hays of Haddo. On Gordon's map Rattray is shown with a town symbol but in fact excavations revealed a settlement in decline by the 15th century and by the Poll Tax of 1696 there were only eight families resident.
