Description:
|
This is a detail of the coastline from a draft map by Robert Gordon of Straloch dating to 1640 but incorporating 16th century material. It gives a useful record of a coastline that is constantly subject to erosion. Rattray is shown with open access from the sea into its sheltered harbour. Sand was constantly encroaching during the 17th century and in 1720 the harbour mouth is reputed to have been blocked in a single storm, marooning a ship inside. Rattray was a burgh which had flourished in the medieval period, but it was already in decline by the 15th century and by 1640 was a mere hamlet. The 1690 Poll Tax record shows only a few fishermen living there.
