Description:
This is a detail from a draft map by Robert Gordon of Straloch dating to the mid 17th century and showing an area of Aberdeenshire near Bennachie. Gordon's local knowledge is clear in this map. The very distinct outline of the Bennachie range of hills, which dominate the Aberdeenshire landscape are immediately recognisable with individual peaks such as Mither Tap clearly drawn. This is in marked contrast to Gordon's usual hill symbols. West of Culsalmond, six triangles, possibly tents, are marked 'Place of St Serfs Fayr'. St Serf or St Sair was a 6th century Irish missionary usually associated with Culross. The fair was still in existence, although declining, in the 19th century.
