Description:
|
This is a detail from a draft map by Robert Gordon of Straloch dating to the 17th century and showing an area of Aberdeenshire around Inverurie. Gordon's local knowledge is clear in this map. Inverurie and Kintore are both marked with a double line of houses either side of a road. It is interesting that Kintore was shown as the larger. Their fortunes were reversed from the mid 19th century when Inverurie grew following the arrival of the railway. The Hill of Barra, south of Old Meldrum, has a circular symbol on top. This appears to be deliberate and although it is not named it may represent the very prominent Iron Age hill fort on the summit.
