Description:
When this map was drawn by Robert Gordon of Straloch in the mid 17th century, Culbin (Cubin) to the north of Forres was a thriving estate with a mansion. By the end of the century it had disappeared. Estate records of 1693 refer to barley, wheat and oats produced on the estate. In 1694 fierce sand storms buried the mansion, the farms and the fertile fields. The laird was ruined and appealed to parliament for tax exemption. Archaeological excavation shows that the Culbin area had supported habitation from prehistoric times until the 17th century. After 1694 it was a sandy desert until the 19th century when tree planting stabilised the sand and created the present Culbin Forest.
