Description:
This is a detail from a draft map compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch between 1633 and his death in 1661. It is of interest in showing the main churches soon after the Protestant Reformation of the church in 1560. From the late 12th century the bishops of Moray lived beside Spynie Loch and a considerable settlement grew there. After the Reformation the Protestant bishops continue to live at Spynie Palace until Bishop Guthrie surrendered to the Covenanters in 1640. The Covenanters themselves used Spynie in 1645 until their defeat by Montrose. After the abolition of the episcopacy in 1689 the palace was abandoned and fell into ruins. The inclusion of Spynie suggests this map may date to before 1645.
