1580-1585
Description:
This fine manuscript depicting St. Andrews is a birds eye view plan; the buildings are shown in perspective rather than from directly above as expected in modern town plans. It is attributed to John Geddy because the hand writing matches a treatise by him held by St. Andrews University Library. The plan was drawn sometime in the early 1580s, possibly influenced by a plan of Edinburgh produced in 1582 by Braun and Hogenburg. The complete cathedral and priory had suggested an earlier date to scholars, but there is no evidence that they were destroyed during the Reformation as had been previously thought, so the later date is now likely. The scale condenses towards the west as Geddy began to run out of space on the paper.
