Description:
|
This map of Shetland first appeared in 1711, in a book by Robert Monteith but published by Sir Robert Sibbald. It is described as 'done from the accurate observation of the most learned who lived in these isles'. The coastline can be followed reasonably and harbours are shown by anchor symbols. The towns of Lerwick and Scalloway are both shown, but there is little attempt to map other details inland. Shetland was first shown as a part of Scotland on Joan Blaeu's map of 1654, based on work by Robert Gordon and Timothy Pont. It was also drawn on various sea charts because the waters off both Orkney and Shetland were well known to the Dutch fishing boats.
