Description:
This 'Chart of the sea coasts of Britain etc' was drawn by John Cowley in 1734 from an original printed in Paris in 1715 by Charles Inselin. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740. It includes the British Isles, and the countries bordering both the English channel and the North Sea. Bearings are given for various routes and marine information such as anchorages and shoals are drawn. In a note in the 1740 publication, Cowley states that he had used other charts to add to Inselin's map whatever additional rocks or other such features he could verify. He made a distinction between this attempted accuracy and earlier decorative maps.
