Description:
This map entitled 'A plan and perspective of the improved lands of Mingary' was surveyed by John Cowley and engraved by Emanuel Bowen in 1734. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740. It shows the land around Mingary Castle, Ardnamurchan, with detailed drawings of land improvements planned or undertaken by Murray. In the mid 18th century forward-looking landowners were trying to improve agriculture by enclosing and draining fields, and adding lime. Alexander Murray was fascinated with the potential for increasing yields by the use of drainage and irrigation. The main drain shown in this map is marked 'intended' and it is probable that few of his more ambitious schemes were realised.
