Description:
This map of 'The Baronry of Stobbo in the Sherreffdom of Peebles' was surveyed by Andrew Bearhop, gardener to Sir Alexander Murray. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Murray in 1740. Stobbo estate had been bought by the Murray family in the 17th century. Due to the involvement of David Murray in the Stuart rising of 1745 the lands were forfeited and sold in 1766. Alexander Murray was interested in agricultural improvement and was responsible for many of the forestry plantings, drainage systems and irrigation canals on the property. knowledge of the heights above the river level were important for drainage schemes and are marked on the map.
