Description:
This French map of Scotland was printed in 1661 by Pierre Du Val, d'Abbeville (1619-1683). Pierre Du Val was a nephew and pupil of Nicholas Sanson, one of the greatest French cartographers. The map making industry was late in developing in France but flourished during the centralised government of King Louis XIV (1638-1715). The stability and prosperity of Louis' reign encouraged patronage of the arts including the production of books and maps. Main settlements, rivers, mountains and some wooded areas are shown by formal symbols but the map as a whole is fairly plain and lacks marginal decoration. The title cartouche is also a fairly simple scroll with the scale unusually placed inside it.
