Description:
This map of the Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands was published in 1636 by Henricus Hondius in Amsterdam in an English language version of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The original Mercator-Hondius Atlas had reached 20 editions by 1632. Many of the maps in the atlas were printed from engraved copper plates originally made by Mercator which the Hondius family had bought for use in their workshop. It was common for plates to be sold and reused for many years. This particular map was copied from a map printed by the rival map firm of Blaeu in 1630. Each of these family firms had the equipment and craftsmen for all processes including the engraving, printing, colouring and binding.
