Description:
This map, surveyed by John Adair, shows a considerable attempt to depict landscape details with symbols for woodland and rough ground. Differences in the relief of the hills are shown by differences in size and profile. This is in marked contrast to the uniform representation of hills on many early maps. The 17th century development of estate grounds is shown by rectangular enclosures, for example at 'Tyllybardin'. Settlements, mills and antiquities are also marked. Few roads are mapped; the coast road south of Dundee is shown as a single dotted line. Adair (1660-1718), a surveyor and mathematician from Edinburgh, was one of the finest Scottish 17th century mapmakers. Unfortunately, he was almost constantly in debt, so few were published in his lifetime.
