Description:
|
John Cowley drafted this map 'Display of the coasting lines of six maps of North Britain' in 1734. It was published in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740 with an explanatory note by Cowley. Cowley, who had surveyed Ardnamurchan for Alexander Murray, realised the inaccuracies of the existing maps of Scotland. Murray encouraged him to attempt an accurate map of Scotland based on maps by Adair, Moll, Gordon of Straloch, Senex, Inselin and Sanson. He reduced the earlier maps to the same scale and superimposed them upon one outline. He concluded that Adair's coastal outline (1688) was the most accurate, but for detail inland Pont's work, as printed in Blaeu's Atlas (1654), was more reliable.
