Description:
This map by Christoph Weigel depicts Scotland as described by William Camden and Robert Sibbald. It was first published in his 'Schul-und-Reisen Atlas' by J.D. Kohler in Nuremberg in 1718. Although Weigel was an engraver himself, this map was engraved by Michael Kauffer; his initials can be seen at the lower right corner of the map. The map has a small, engraved vignette showing a bay and the title is decorated with sea creatures. The hand colouring divides the country into Highlands and Lowlands. Camden and Sibbald were well-known historians of Scotland. It is likely that this map is based largely on that of Scotland printed in Camden's 'Britannia' in 1607.
