Description:
This map entitled 'A map of the improved moss and improveable Bay of Kintra' was based on a survey by John Cowley in 1734. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740. It shows part of Murray's land in Ardnamurchan, with details of his land drainage scheme consisting of two main drains between the river Shiel and Kintra Bay. An inset shows how this system could be adapted to other rivers. This drainage scheme is named on Alexander Bruce's map of Loch Sunart produced in 1733 and also reproduced in Murray's book. On that map there is an annotation that the drained Moss comprised 1,300 acres, a vast area of improved land.
