Description:
This map of the Ardnamurchan area titled 'A map of the Duke of Argyle's heritable dukedom' by John Cowley was engraved by Emanuel Bowen in 1734. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740. In a marginal note and in an essay in Murray's book, John Cowley discussed this map. Most of it was redrawn from earlier maps but the Ardnamurchan area was based on an accurate new survey undertaken by Andrew Bearhop, for Alexander Murray. Topographical details are drawn and features such as mines and an iron furnace are marked. The land holding lairds are also named.
