Description:
This coloured map of Scotland was engraved in Amsterdam by Frederik de Wit the elder in circa 1675-1680. It was first printed in de Wit's Atlas of about 1680 and later reprinted in various other atlases between 1680 and 1725. There were three map engravers named Frederik de Wit, a father, son and grandson who owned a map publishers in Amsterdam between 1648 and 1712, producing over 400 new maps as well as reprinting earlier maps from copper engraving plates bought from other firms. Map collectors of the 17th century would have been flattered by the illusions to their scientific and classical learning that are given by the drawings of scientific instruments and the classically pillared tomb around the map title.
