Description:
|
This map of the Ardnamurchan area titled 'A plan of Loch Sunart' by Alexander Bruce was engraved by Richard Cooper in Edinburgh in 1733. It was reproduced in 'The True Interest of Great Britain' published by Sir Alexander Murray in 1740. Murray had discovered lead ore and bought the land around Sunart in 1723. The lead mining rights were leased to the York Buildings Company. The map is dedicated to General Wade, Commander in Chief of the army in Scotland, who was a partner in the company. A marginal drawing shows the mine buildings, including water wheels which were used to drive machines to crush the ore. Later, in the 1750s, water power was also used to drain the mines.
