Description:
|
Manuscript elevation and plan views of the Earl of Gowrie's House, Perth, on two sheets. They are undated. The drawings show all three floors of the building. Pencil notes on one sheet give the background to the history of the building. The 'Gowrie conspiracy', referred to in the notes, was an apparent attempt to abduct King James VI on August 5th, 1600, and ended with John and Alexander Ruthven, the alleged conspirators, slain in a melee. The official version of events was questioned by many contemporaries, and aspects remain a mystery today. The House no longer exists. The Sheriff Court on Tay Street occupies the former site.
