Description:
|
This manuscript copy of Gordon of Rothiemay's 1661 plan of Aberdeen, Abredonia Novae et veteris descriptio was made in 1750. It is considerably simplified from the original. Many details and decorative insets such as the city insignia have been omitted. At the top of the map is a handwritten annotation dated Aberdeen 1798 and signed by Robert Hamilton, Professor of Philosophy at Marischal College, Aberdeen. He states that he has checked this copy against the original in Marischal. This note probably alludes to the original which was given to the college in 1750 by Bishop Robert Keith. The note shows that this copy was in Aberdeen in 1798 but it does not prove it was copied there.
