Description:
This sketch plan, drawn by Lord Wemyss in 1678, shows the coal works belonging to two neighbouring properties, Sheriffhall and Woolmet, at Newton, Edinburgh. There is a simple scale in fathoms on the top margin and some measurements are given. The march boundary runs almost parallel with a coal seam 6 feet thick. A second seam lies to the south west (top of plan) in the Sheriffhall lands. Coal sinks are shown cutting into these seams in both properties. A number of annotations give information concerning work done in the years 1676-1678. The Woolmet property belonged to Major Biggar, and a note indicates he had purchased it in 1645.
