Description:
An early to mid-eighteenth century plan of the fortifications of Fort William and the town of Maryburgh from the Wade collection. This map is neither signed nor dated. This map clearly shows the outline of all the major works of Fort William, as well as the position of buildings and gardens in the nearby town. The strong position of the fort, protected on two sides by Loch Shiel and the boggy ground around the Nevis water, is apparent. Fort William stood on the site of a Cromwellian citadel constructed in 1656. It was rebuilt in 1690, and periodically improved thereafter. The town of Maryburgh was erected as an adjunct to the fort by royal charter, to furnish the garrison with its needs.
