Description:
|
This manuscript plan of the district of Fort William, although undated, forms part of the collection associated with Lieutenant-General George Wade (1673-1748), now held by the National Library of Scotland. Prominent features on the map are the fort itself, the watercourses in the area, and the position of low and rising ground, these latter marked 'healthy' (dry) or marsh. The town of Maryburgh is also indicated. Fort William was one of the strongest fortified posts in the Highlands, and was strengthened at various times after its initial construction in 1656, most notably by Captain Theodore Dury in 1711-13. A measure of his success is that it successfully withstood a Jacobite siege from 20th March to 3rd April 1746.
