Description:
This map shows the plans for Fort Augustus and is dated 1729, the year construction began. The map is signed by the fort's architect, Captain John Romer, who was engineer to the Board of Ordinance. Fort Augustus is considered Romer's greatest work in Scotland. It can be seen to consist of four large and very strong stone bastions, linked by walls. The immediate area around the installation in also shown in some detail, including the mouth of the river Tarff (Tarfee), and the surrounding hills and escarpments. In 1746, the fort garrison of three companies of Guage's regiment were forced to surrender to Jacobite troops, after a powder magazine in the north-west bastion (6) had exploded during a short siege.
