Description:
A map of Fife, together with plans of the towns of St Andrews and Cupar. The map is very detailed, with more than eleven hundred place-names. The map was compiled by James Gordon of Rothiemay (1617-1686), son of Robert Gordon of Straloch and is dated 1642, the year when James Gordon was requested by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland to compile a new survey of Fife. The manuscript is probably a duplicate of a draft compiled from Gordon's observations and sent to Amsterdam for engraving under the title of Fifae Vicecomitatus, before publication in Blaeu's 'Atlas Novus' of 1654. There are a number of small differences between the place-names of the printed map and of this manuscript.
