Description:
A large scale map of Loch Leven in Fife and the country between the Ochil Hills and the Lomond Hills. The map was compiled by James Gordon of Rothiemay (1617-1686), son of Robert Gordon of Straloch, and is dated 25 October 1642. In that year, James Gordon was requested by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland to compile a new survey of Fife. Gordon's observations were compiled into a map entitled Fifae Vicecomitatus, first published in Blaeu's 'Atlas Novus' in 1654 together with two maps covering Fife drafted by Timothy Pont in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. This particular manuscript was probably not the source of the corresponding part of Gordon's printed map, however.
