Description:
This anonymous sketch plan of land near Duffus, Morayshire, was drawn in or shortly after 1740. It shows an area extending inland from the sea to Spindle Muir. Reclamation of peat lands was an important part of 18th century land improvements. Two water mills are marked on the inlet to the loch draining into the Black Moss. Mills were a monopoly of landowners. Areas of muir are shown with the names of proprietors of these and the surrounding lands. A marginal note describes Burghhead as a fishtown owned by Mr Dunbar. Burghhead, which had been a large Pictish fort, is shown on William Roy's map in the later 18th century as a small settlement and fields beside the fort remain.
