Description:
This coloured manuscript plan, drawn in 1734 or soon after, shows a section of the river Spey, Morayshire, between Dipple and Ordiequish. Associated papers relate to a bulwark and possible repairs to it. This part of the Spey from near Fochabers towards the sea has a tendency to deposit shingle banks and form meanders. This plan shows one area of deposition, with a gravel bank marked that had been deposited in 1734. The landowner, the Duke of Gordon, had built a fence or bulwark across one such weak point of the bank to regulate the river. Two breeches of the bank near the bulwark suggest that problems continued.
