Description:
This sketch plan shows properties in Coldstream, Berwickshire. A note on the back identifies this as a map drawn for a legal case between Mark Kerr, Commendator (a lay church officer) of Coldstream, and Alexander Home of Hutounhall and others in 1589. The property under dispute is an croft 'called the orchard' which lies beside the buildings of St Mary's Abbey. The church, cloisters and garden are shown. It is probable that the orchard had belonged to the Abbey before the Reformation. This is an interesting map as it documents the disposal of church property after the Reformation of the mid 16th century. It would appear that at this date the main church buildings and cloisters were intact.
