Description:
This anonymous mid-18th century sketch map shows the barony of Auchindown (Auchendoun) in Banffshire in reference to a march dispute between the Dukes of Gordon and Braco. Two areas of contested lands are shown with the boundary marches. Auchindown castle is a 15th century tower house with a 16th century courtyard wall. It was abandoned at some point in the 17th century. By 1725 the Duke of Gordon allowed William Duke of Braco to take stone for use elsewhere. Several other details of the area are drawn including two watermills sketched with vertical wheels of the type used from the medieval period until the later 18th century. Several wells are also shown, emphasizing the importance of water.
