Description:
The map shows the island of Lewis and Harris, together with the Flannan Islands, the Shiant Islands and the islands of the Sound of Harris. The map is oriented with west at the top. The map has the east-west orientation of the north coastline of Lewis which is characteristic of the reformed outline of Scotland initiated by the mapping of Timothy Pont. Whilst many place names are identifiable today, the depiction of the coastline and of the sea lochs is not accurate. The map was compiled from observation on the ground by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. It was engraved in Amsterdam, for publication in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, first published in 1654.
