Description:
|
The two parts of the map show the Outer Hebrides south of the sound of Harris, including the Uists and Benbecula shown as one island on the larger part, with Eriskay, Barra, Vatersay, Pabay, Mingulay and Berneray on the smaller part. The map is oriented with west at the top. Many of the smaller islands are shown as inhabited, even Berneray in the extreme south, whilst many of the sea lochs and also the inland lochs are depicted diagrammatically. The map was compiled from observation on the ground by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. It was engraved in Amsterdam, for publication in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, first published in 1654.
