Description:
The map shows the island of Islay and also Colonsay and Gigha, locating them by including small parts of Knapdale and Kintyre to the east and of Jura to the north. The Rhinns of Islay are misoriented, as is Loch Gruinart, so that the island is scarcely recognisable from its shape. There is much detail, nevertheless, of settlement mostly located all around the coast. The map was compiled from observation on the ground by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. It was engraved in Amsterdam, for publication in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, first published in 1654.
