Description:
The map covers much more than Strath Naver. It shows the north coast of Sutherland and its hinterland straths, from Strath Halladale to the Kyle of Durness. The map is unusual in including some of the descriptions which appeared on the manuscript source map. For example, Loch Eriboll has 'A holl of 180 fathoms deep'. Information inland is sparse, by comparison with the detail on the coast. The manuscript draft source of this map was compiled by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. It was sent to Amsterdam but was returned to Scotland and is now in the National Library of Scotland. The engraving was first published in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, in 1654.
