Description:
|
The map shows southwest Sutherland plus southern Strath Oykel and Strath Carron. The cartouche is incomplete, as it was one of the last maps to be engraved in Amsterdam for publication in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, first published in 1654. Not only are the coastlands around Dornoch, Golspie and Brora densely settled, but in contrast to today, the inland straths (Strath Carron, Strath Fleet, Strath Brora) are also well populated. The map was compiled from observation on the ground by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century.
