Description:
A map of the lands around the Moray Firth, with the greatest detail in the counties of Moray, Nairn and the northeast of Inverness, but also including the Black Isle and a small part of Easter Ross north of the Cromarty Firth. The detail around the Loch of Spynie, north of Elgin, is of particular interest. The formal layout of the Bog Of Gight on the east bank of the Spey post-dates Pont's field work. The map was engraved in Amsterdam for Blaeu's 'Atlas Novus', first published in 1654. The engravers copied a draft by Robert Gordon of Straloch, who drew largely on an earlier manuscript map by Timothy Pont which survives in the National Library of Scotland.
