Description:
A relatively small scale map showing all of Fife and both shores of the Firths of Forth and Tay. Fife is shown in considerable detail and with greater accuracy than any other map of Scotland in Blaeu's Atlas Novus. The map locates some 430 more places than appear in the two maps by Timothy Pont which cover Fife and were published in the same Atlas. The great density of place names necessitated the use of very small cartographic signs to locate those places. Robert Gordon's manuscript drafts for this engraving, one of which survives in the National Library of Scotland, were probably compiled in 1642. The engraving was made in Amsterdam and first published in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, in 1654.
